Comic Opera Guild has promoted the area of light opera through performance, scholarship and recording for over 50 years. It has also sponsored the Harold Haugh Light Opera Vocal Competition for a quarter century, bringing some of the country's best young singers to Michigan to showcase their talent. The event stands alone in that it requires performers to act as well as sing... a combination demanded in opera today.

Distinguished judges not only rate, but also give singers valuable hand-written, individual critiques. The event provides food and drink for competitors, and all finalists are awarded cash prizes, things seldom seen in competitions. It is highly rated by singers, who come from all over the country at their own expense. Many have said that the experience was well worth the investment, even if they did not win.

The competition continues only through the generosity of music lovers, not companies. The staff that runs the competition is made up of volunteers, as are its distinguished judges. Therefore, beyond rental expenses, almost all the money that we raise will go directly to the singers. All donors are recognized, regardless of the amount of their contribution.

The 2027 event is scheduled for March 20 in Ann Arbor.
